Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that we have began engaging with US President Donald Trump’s administration and are making progress towards reaching peace and ending the war with Russia.
“We’ve started working with President Trump’s team and can immediately see that success is possible. Right now, the world looks to America as the power capable of not just ending the war but also ensuring the long-term viability of peace. Before the Munich Security Conference, I had an excellent call with the President of the United States, as well as a substantial meeting with Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Rubio,” Zelensky wrote on X.
“We also expect General Kellogg to visit Ukraine shortly to assess the situation and seek avenues to President Trump’s robust answers, which have the potential to actually bring peace. Our teams are working diligently and thoroughly on a special deal between our countries—one that will undoubtedly enhance both America and Ukraine. We are determined to making it a true success, just as we said,” Zelensky continued.
Earlier, at the Munich Security Conference, he stated, “I trust we can count on President Trump to support us. I rely on him because he is the President of the United States.”
However, according to media sources, Zelensky cautioned that the days of guaranteed US backing for Europe were past. During his speech, he said, “The old days are over – when America supported Europe just because it always had.”
In a separate development, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke on the phone on Saturday, discussing a variety of matters, including the upcoming meeting between President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump.
According to media reports, Lavrov and Rubio agreed to keep a communication channel open to resolve accumulated problems in US-Russian relations “for removing unilateral barriers, inherited from the previous administration, to mutually beneficial trade, economic, and investment cooperation,” according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The much-anticipated Ukraine peace talks between Trump and Putin are scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia soon.
