Establishing day-care cancer facilities and expanding digital health infrastructure may help ensure that quality care reaches the final mile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a post-budget webinar held via video conference today, the Prime Minister emphasised the need of implementing health programs announced in the Union Budget to ensure that benefits reach the greatest number of people.

“The establishment of nursery cancer centres and the development of digital healthcare infrastructure will ensure quality healthcare reaches the last mile,” according to the prime minister.

In the Union Budget, the Finance Minister stated that “all district hospitals will have day care cancer centres.” About 200 day care cancer facilities will be created by 2025-26.”

Furthermore, PM Modi stated that “telemedicine facilities are being expanded in all primary health centres (PHCs).”

According to health ministry data, approximately 31,000 PHCs are active in the country, with over 40,000 doctors/medical officers providing primary care to individuals in rural and hilly, tribal, and desert areas.

PM Modi also stated that 10,000 more medical seats will be added in this budget, with an aim of 75,000 new medical seats over the next five years.

“These initiatives will have a transformative impact on people’s lives,” he added, adding that they will also “create numerous new employment opportunities for youth”.

The Prime Minister also highlighted that measures like ‘Heal in India’, outlined in the Union Budget, will enhance the country’s medical tourism.

“Efforts are being made to establish India as a global tourism and wellness hub,” he said, asking healthcare players to invest in promoting health tourism.

PM Modi also stressed the “need to fully realise the potential of yoga and wellness tourism.”

He added that the tourist sector has the potential to contribute up to 10% of India’s GDP and provide employment for crores of young people.
