Vijender Gupta, the BJP MLA-elect, will serve as Speaker of the upcoming Delhi Assembly. He stated that the CAG report would be presented during the first session of the Assembly.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, Gupta revealed that the party has decided to make him Assembly Speaker.
“After 27 years, the BJP is forming the government in Delhi, which brings me enormous joy. We are attending the oath-taking ceremony today.
Congratulations, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and all ministers. I have been appointed Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. I will ensure that the Assembly follows its laws.
“I definitely declare that as soon as I assume the post of Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, the first thing I want to do is present the report of the CAG on the table of the Delhi Assembly,” said Mr. Singh.
Earlier, CM-designate Rekha Gupta stated that the former AAP government would be held accountable for the corruption cases. In an exclusive interview with IANS, Minister-designate Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that corruption cases will be uncovered and those implicated will face jail time. “Yes, the CAG report will be processed very shortly. The CAG report will be tabled during the first session. Along with that, corruption cases will be disclosed, and those responsible will be imprisoned,” he stated.
The CAG study indicated a considerable revenue loss caused by flaws in the Delhi government’s excise policy. According to several accounts, the audit report on the liquor policy from 2017 to 2022 identified numerous infractions in quality control, license, pricing, and systemic enforcement failures. The audit spans three years under the previous excise policy and one year under the now-defunct 2021-22 excise scheme.
Gupta stated that the Delhi Assembly is a temple of democracy, governed by norms and laws that must be observed.
“Sheesh Mahal is a dark character, hence the Bharatiya Janata Party would not want to touch it even remotely,” the minister stated.
Following the oath taken by Rekha Gupta and her six ministers, the new Assembly session will be announced. A pro-tem Speaker will deliver the oath to the 70 new MLAs, following which the Speaker will be designated.
Since Vijender Gupta informed IANS that he has been designated by the party as Speaker, he will take the oath and preside over the House.
Ten years ago, Vijender Gupta was escorted out of the Delhi Assembly after reportedly making insulting statements about a party member, O.P. Sharma challenged then-AAP MLA Alka Lamba. Images from within the Assembly showed Gupta being carried by half a dozen marshals. The BJP leader even held onto the furniture, struggling and resisting all the way out the door. Gupta was once the leader of the opposition.
